Countdown Traffic Lights

The Sand Glass traffic light design uses an hourglass instead of simple circles, helping to soothe commuter impatience and reduce sudden stops by signaling how much time is left before the light changes.

Designed by Thanva Tivawong, the Sand Glass design features an hourglass shape and sand made of LED lights. The ‘sand’ slowly trickles from the top of the hourglass to the bottom, proving a simple and intuitive way for motorists to anticipate when the light is about to change. The yellow light would appear between the green and red lights, where it would display a countdown to warn the motorist to prepare to stop or get ready to go.
